LAX HISTORY
In 2009 there were 59,542,151 passengers traveling through LAX (according to Wikipedia) which makes LAX the seventh busiest airport in the world! This in turn also makes it one of the 7th toughest airports to find a car rental!
It truly is amazing how much traffic flows through LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) on any single given day. All of that traffic has to be catered to with food, rental cars, and hotels. There is a vast network of transportation, restaraunts and hospitality suites to accomodate this.
In 1928 the Los Angeles City Council selected 640 acres of land in souther Westchester that would become the site of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This site used to be fields of wheat, barley, and grain! It would soon become the 7th largest airport in the world!
In 1958 the airport went through a complete redesign at the hands of Pereira & Luckman. It included a massive series of terminals and parking structures. This was an incredible expansion. In 1982 two more terminals were started which made LAX even larger and well on its way to what it is today.

WHY IS IT CALLED LA"X"?
Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather station at the airports. So, at that time, LA served as the designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this identifier.[13] Portland International Airport in Oregon also has a similar code: PDX. "LAX" is also used for the International Port of Los Angeles located in San Pedro and for the Amtrak-serving Union Station in downtown. All three along with the Atlanta (ATL) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) designations have become culturally eponymous and are often used in shorthand as an indicator of identity by local residents.
